Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

Keep any doctor who takes Medicare and know your costs up front. We compare supplement prices from the companies we represent in your state, and it costs you nothing to work with us.

Look up a supplement company

Not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. government or the federal Medicare program.

Not sure which is right for you?

Most people choose between two paths: Original Medicare with a supplement, or a Medicare Advantage plan. They can't be combined, so it's worth picking the one that fits how you live and use care.

Or call us at (888) 840-5814 and we'll walk you through it.

What a Medicare Supplement does

  • Works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay costs Medicare doesn't, like deductibles, coinsurance and copays.
  • Use any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. No networks and no referrals.
  • Plans are standardized by federal law, so a Plan G from one company has the same benefits as a Plan G from another. What differs is the price, the company, and how its rates have changed over time.
  • Supplements don't include prescription drug coverage, so most people pair one with a stand-alone Part D plan.
  • A supplement can't be used together with a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Supplements generally don't cover routine dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term care.

Popular plans

Plan G

Covers your share of Medicare-approved costs except the yearly Part B deductible. The most popular choice for people new to Medicare.

Plan N

A lower premium in exchange for some cost sharing: you pay the Part B deductible, copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't lead to an admission, and any Part B excess charges.

High-deductible Plan G

The same benefits as Plan G after you meet a yearly deductible, in exchange for a lower premium.

Plans C and F are only available to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use their own standardized plans.

When to buy: timing matters

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts 6 months and starts the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. During this window, companies can't turn you down or charge you more because of your health.

After that, most companies can ask health questions and may decline you or charge more, unless you have a guaranteed issue right. Examples include losing employer or retiree coverage, your Medicare Advantage plan leaving your area, or trying Medicare Advantage for the first time and switching back within 12 months.

Some states give extra chances to change plans. We'll tell you what applies where you live.

How supplement prices are set

  • Community-rated: Everyone pays the same price regardless of age.
  • Issue-age-rated: Based on your age when you buy, so it doesn't go up because you get older.
  • Attained-age-rated: Based on your current age, so it goes up as you get older.

Any of these can also rise because of inflation and claims. We look at each company's history of rate increases, not just today's price.

How it works with us

  1. 1Request your quotes. It takes about two minutes.
  2. 2We compare the companies we represent in your ZIP code, including their rate history.
  3. 3Review your options with a licensed agent and apply. You pay the same premium you'd pay buying directly.

Look up a Medicare Supplement company

Type a company name to see its background, financial strength rating and where it sells plans. A Plan G from one company has the same benefits as a Plan G from any other, so what you're really comparing is the company: its price, its rate history and its service.
