What is a Part D drug plan?

A Medicare Part D plan helps pay for prescription medicines. Private insurance companies approved by Medicare offer these plans. Each plan has its own list of covered drugs, pharmacy network, premium, deductible and copays, so the best plan depends on the medicines you take and where you fill them.

Who usually needs one on its own?

  • People with Original Medicare (Parts A and B), which doesn't cover most prescriptions.
  • People with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, since supplements don't include drug coverage.
  • Many people with Medicaid or Extra Help, who can often get help paying drug plan costs.

Many Medicare Advantage plans already include drug coverage, so you usually wouldn't add a separate Part D plan.

Key dates

  • Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7 each year.
  • Changes made during that period start January 1.
  • When you first get Medicare, you have an Initial Enrollment Period to join a drug plan.

Don't wait too long

If you go without Part D or other creditable drug coverage for 63 days or more in a row after you're first eligible, you may pay a late enrollment penalty added to your premium for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
